

The Krowor Municipal Assembly on 7th June, 2024, commemorated Green Ghana Day, with a tree planting and tree nurturing exercise at various locations in Nungua Township, as part of the 2024 Green Ghana Day which is under the theme, ‘Growing for a Greener Tomorrow’.
The event forms part of an aggressive reforestation and afforestation strategy of the Government to restore the lost forest cover of the Country and contribute towards global efforts to fight climate change and other adverse impact on live and livelihood.
This national project is targeted at planting 1,200 trees across lands around degraded areas, individual properties, recreational grounds and parks among others, in order to achieve a greener and a more sustainable future in and around Nungua township.
The Director of the Municipal Assembly, Mrs. Jemima Apedo led the team, she encouraged all present to participate in the tree planting exercise and ensure that they survive.
The event was successfully coordinated. All heads of department including staff were present to participate.
Other officials who participated include:
- The doctor in charge of the Zimmermann Presbyterian Clinic and some members of medical staff.
- Representatives from the Education Ministry of Krowor Municipal Assembly
iii. The Head teachers of the Zimmermann Cluster of Schools
- The pastors and congregation of the SDA, Nungua Adogono church and other individuals from different locations.
The tree planting exercise took place at various locations namely:
- The forecourt of the Zimmermann Presbyterian Clinic
- The Compound of the Zimmermann cluster of schools
- The Nungua Adogono SDA Church
- Individual properties and homes
The government provided some logistical support including seedlings tools and technical aid to ensure the success of the exercise.
Some of the seedlings planted are:
Acacia, Lebbeck, Flamboyant, veitchia palm, Montalis, Polyathia, Blighia, Red Sandawood, Guava, Milletia, Mahogany, Palm tree, Royal palm, Polyeathia, Lemon, Mango and Coconut.
Green Ghana has yielded the following positive outcome:
- Increased forest cover of the country which has helped to mitigate climate change and promoted biodiversity.
- The initiative has brought back community engagement which makes it easy for individuals and cooperated to come together for a common cause.
iii. It has also been incorporated into the educational curriculum thus teaching students about the benefits of ecological sustainability.
Some identified challenges include:
- Funding constraints to adequately support initiative.
- Inadequate monitoring of planted trees and ensuring long-term sustainability.
iii. Proper awareness creation to inform individual and cooperate entities to participate.
Conclusion and Recommendation:
Green Ghana day is a commendable initiative that demonstrates government’s commitment to ensuring environmental sustainability, the project has a notable potential to make significant impact on the environment, and it is important that all stakeholders support the initiative to ensure its success.
The government should increase resources and funds allocated to the project. Proper awareness must be created to ensure participation. Leaders of various organizations must be encouraged to mobilize their people to support the project. Proper monitory must be carried out by the coordinators to ensure survival on the planted trees
