68TH INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

Ghana’s 68th Independence Day, celebrated on March 6, 2025, was a significant event reflecting on the nation’s journey since gaining freedom from colonial rule in 1957. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Reflect, Review, Reset,” emphasizing the importance of assessing past achievements, current challenges, and future aspirations.

The event took place at Nungua Senior High School, in the Krowor Municipality at exactly 7:00 am. The Member of Parliament for Krowor, Hon  Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Mrs Jemima Apedo Kallikrates,  the Municipal Coordinating Director, Nungua Chief Imam, The Queen mother of Blekese traditional area, a delegation from the Krowor Education Directorate, The Kpeshie Divisional Police Commander and Head of schools, and a total of 390 pupils, and 26 teachers drawn from both private and public basic and second-cycle institutions within the municipal­ity were among the invited guest who graced the wonderful occasion. The days activities included prayers by the various religious groups, cultural displays, and performances by schoolchildren. The atmosphere was vibrant, with attendees dressed in their national regalia to celebrate the joyous occasion.

The day started with a welcome address by the Municipal Director of Education, Mr Azaria Ayariga who urged all to prioritize education as the most powerful tool to drive national development and transformation and admonished the learners to embrace the values of diligence, respect and perseverance. After, the was a march past and a cultural display by the schools present. Following the address from the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kro­wor Constituency, Hon Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said the lack of loyalty of the citizenry, especially, the leadership of the country had contributed to the country’s development. She has, therefore, urged the leadership of the country to lead by example so the upcoming gen­eration could learn from them.

Mrs Jemima Apedo Kallikrates, the Municipal Coordinating Director also addressed the occasion by encouraging the youth to take education as their topmost priority, accept corrections and responsibility and avoid social vices that will only cut short their dreams of becoming great in future. At the end of the event, each of the schools that participat­ed in the parade was awarded certificates.

Nungua Senior High School emerged as the winner for the best participating senior high school, while Krowor South Circuit Cadet and Krowor North Circuit Cadet came second and third respectively. For the basic schools divi­sion Joy Kids School emerged winners, with Queen Jane School and Nungua Kroma ‘5’ Basic School placing second and third respectively.
