KROWOR NCCE AND GHANA NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE PUBLIC SENSITIZATION

The Krowor National Commission for Civic Education in Collaboration with the Ledzokuku Municipal Fire Service educated listeners at the Latenu radio station (96.1 MHz) to create awareness on Fire Safety, its causes and prevention. This occurred on Tuesday 4th February 2025.

Madam Naa Astwei Mensah an officer from the Krowor NCCE, Mr. Ebenezer Nii Ayi Mensah and Abraham Adjetey Ashong both from the Ledzokuku Municipal Fire Service took turns to educate listeners on fire safety.

Madam Naa Astwei Mensah enlightened listeners on the importance of their civic responsibilities where she quoted Article 41 of the 1992 constitution admonishing citizens to perform their rights and obligations by contributing to the well-being of the community they live in and ensuring that they obey its stipulated rules. She said it is in the light of this that the NCCE have engaged Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service to elucidate listeners on fire safety.

On his part ADO I Ebenezer Nii Ayi Mensah educated listeners on fire safety and prevention, classes of fire and fire prevention measures especially at home. He indicated that fire needs fuel, heat and air to start and if any of this is taken away the fire will be extinguished and as such it is important residents be educated on the formation of fire and highly combustible materials. He further outlined some causes of domestic fires such as: overloading circuits, outdated electrical wiring, faulty electrical outlets and appliances, inappropriate use of LPG, use of mobile phone near LPG burners in the kitchen and placing flammable items near heat.

Further on, ADO I Abraham Adjetey Ashong revealed that with the surge in the use of LPG (liquified Petroleum Gas) in our homes it is imperative that proper safety measures be taken to prevent fires caused by inappropriate use of LPGs. Mr. Adjetey listed some measures like keeping the cylinder upright in a well-ventilated area, regular checking for leaks, turning off the valve when not in use, allowing the cylinder to sit for at least 30 minutes before connecting to valve after refilling and the use of quality regulator, valve and pressure gauge as the appropriate safety tips for LPG users.

During the call-in segment of the discussion, a male caller suggested that water sprinklers installed in hotels and high-rise buildings be used domestically since it helps combat fire easily.  The second caller also wanted clarification on the use of mobile phones near LPG burners in the kitchen and if they could start fires.
