
On March 18, 2025, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Krowor Municipal Assembly celebrated International Women’s Day in partnership with Firm Foundation Widows Association and Accra Metropolitan University. This event occurred at Osokronowe in the Nungua enclave under the theme “Accelerate Action; Empowering Widows for a Brighter Future.
The program attracted diverse audience, including officials from the department of social welfare, community leaders, widows and advocacy groups. Their active engagement demonstrated a shared commitment to advancing the well- being of widows and ensuring their full participation in society.
The celebration aimed to shed light the challenges widows face, provide support mechanisms, and promote their economic and social empowerment. In a keynote address, the President of Accra Metropolitan University, Professor Goski Alabi emphasized the need for urgent and strategic interventions to improve the welfare of widows. She called on policymakers, civil society organizations and community leaders to implement sustainable initiatives that will address the unique straggles of widows and create an inclusive society for all.
The event featured a range of activities designed to educate, empower and support widows, including; Motivational speeches and Awareness campaigns, where social welfare officials educated widows on their rights, inheritance laws and available support systems for them, they also took them through financial and entrepreneurial training on small scale business management, financial literacy and self- employment opportunities. There were sessions for personal testimonies by widows to share their experiences and highlighting their struggles and success stories to inspire others, panel discussions on policies and community driven solutions to enhance widow’s welfare and donation of essential supplies such as food, and financial assistance to help improve their livelihoods.
The International Women’s Day celebration in Nungua was a resounding success, reinforcing the collective responsibility of society in ensuring widows are not marginalized. The event served as a call to action for continuous efforts in policy formulation, skill development and economic empowerment for widows. The Krowor Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to implementing long- term strategies that promote the welfare of widows, ensuring they have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
